Nearly 200,000 businesses in our participating cities can use FileLocal. That’s nearly 9 out of 10 businesses in Washington State that currently pay local taxes.

The system is designed to allow for the addition of other types of business tax payments as needed.

  10. Why isn’t FileLocal housed with and run by the Washington State Department of Revenue?

FileLocal coordinates information with the state, but it makes more sense to provide this kind of vital service locally. The fact is that each city knows its local business community far better than the state ever could. Cities periodically adjust their business tax requirements and tax rates to address changes in local economic conditions. Doing so enables the cities to rapidly deal with unforeseen challenges, but also to jump on unexpected opportunities. The kind of flexibility that FileLocal provides reduces bureaucracy and creates a better environment for businesses.

Another reason to keep FileLocal truly local is that you can reach a local person in each participating city to get answers to your questions or issues.
